Onam Celebrated in Shepparton

Onam – a festival observed in Kerala, South India, was celebrated in Shepparton. Onam, held in August and September for 10 days, originated in Kerala to celebrate the golden rule of King Mahabali. Lord Vishnu came to earth in the form of a dwarf Brahmin who trampled Mahabali to the netherworld. But Lord Vishnu granted the king’s sole wish i.e. to visit his land and people once every year.

Surf life savers warn migrants about dangers as drownings increase

According to the Royal Life Saving Society’s national report, released on Monday, more Australians are drowning as the country faces record high temperatures. There were 276 drowning deaths in 2018-19, a 10 per cent increase from the previous financial year.

A snapshot taken from newly released census data shows that at the 2016 Census 28.4 per cent of Victoria’s population were born overseas and 49.1 per cent of Victorians were either born overseas or have a parent who was born overseas.
