From high school to the UN Youth Summit
On Wednesday Shepparton resident Liaqat Amadhi flies to Dubai as an Australian representative at the three-day Arab Youth International Model United Nations conference in the United Arab Emirates city, thanks to the support of his school, The Fairley Foundation, Greater Shepparton City Council, the Ethnic Council of Shepparton and Goulburn Ovens TAFE.
Parenting sessions in Shepparton
The Ethnic Council of Shepparton held its first session to help and improve family relationships on Friday. Program facilitator Thon Thon said statistics showed men were responsible for most violence in the home.
Onam Celebrated in Shepparton
Onam – a festival observed in Kerala, South India, was celebrated in Shepparton. Onam, held in August and September for 10 days, originated in Kerala to celebrate the golden rule of King Mahabali. Lord Vishnu came to earth in the form of a dwarf Brahmin who trampled Mahabali to the netherworld. But Lord Vishnu granted the king’s sole wish i.e. to visit his land and people once every year.
Surf life savers warn migrants about dangers as drownings increase
More than 270 Australians drowned in 2018-19, with nearly half of those deaths over summer. According to the Royal Life Saving Society’s national report, released on Monday, more Australians are drowning as the country faces record high temperatures. There were 276 drowning deaths in 2018-19, a 10 per cent increase from the previous financial year.
Getting skilled migrants into work
Australia is missing out on much of the value skilled migrants bring because many struggle to find work fitting their qualifications and experience on arrival here, new research has found. Many migrants feel there is little government support for them in the first year of their settlement; and, they feel they are not made aware of the challenges of finding work in Australia before their arrival, the study found.
Snapshot of Increasingly Diverse Victoria
Victoria is home to one of the most culturally diverse societies in the world, and is also among the fastest-growing and most diverse states in Australia. A snapshot taken from newly released census data shows that at the 2016 Census 28.4 per cent of Victoria’s population were born overseas and 49.1 per cent of Victorians were either born overseas or have a parent who was born overseas.
Multicultural Water Safety and Settlement
As Australia’s population has steadily increased over time, so has the diversity and makeup of the people within it. Victoria becomes more culturally diverse each day and unfortunately many of these more recent Australians have not received water or swimming education that is so important to their safety due to a number of barriers to participation.
