Afghan Community at Culture Corner

Culture Corner - Afghan CommunityGreater Shepparton’s Afghan Community will take over Maude Street Mall on Saturday 7 September from 10am-2pm, showcasing some of their traditional clothing, music, food and their well known dances.

The Greater Shepparton City Council initiative — Culture Corner — highlights cultural diversity in the region.

Hosted by the Goulburn Valley Hazara Youth Association, along with Gowrie Street Primary School community hub, the event included traditional food, children’s activities, henna and a photo showroom of Afghanistan.

Hub leader Zahra Haydar Big said the rain had not affected the success of the day.

‘Today we are proudly displaying our culture and we want to thank the City of Greater Shepparton Council for giving us the opportunity to share our culture with the people of Shepparton.’

Goulburn Valley Hazara Youth Association leader Asad Qasimi said the day coincided with the sacred month of Muharram.

‘Muharram is about sacrifice and today we are helping people who need our help by sharing our culture with all culture,’ he said.
