Cultural Bus Tour offers multicultural snapshot

Greater Shepparton’s multicultural community came together for the annual Cultural Bus Tour yesterday. The Ethnic Council of Shepparton and District ran the tour in collaboration with multicultural groups and the Shepparton Interfaith Network.

Shepparton Afghan Association president Shoukat Ali Rafee said the main aim of the visit was to bring communities together.

Shepparton’s multicultural community wants to know what is going on in the mosque, what’s going on in the church and the Gurduara, so we have a visit as a family to show that we all live in Shepparton together,” Mr Ali Rafee said. Ethnic Council of Shepparton and District’ project officer Andrew Murley said the day was about sharing different cultures.

More than 100 people attended the tour that travelled to the Iraqi, Turkish and Afghan Mosques and the Gurdwara Sahib (Sikh Temple).

“We have been doing this for five years now as an annual event through the Greater Shepparton Heritage Open Days Cultural Bus Tour, where people come to learn about the different cultures and the different ways of life that different cultures live and how they’re going in Shepparton,” Mr Murley said.

Stopping for a traditional barbecue lunch at the Afghani Mosque, Mr Ali Rafee said it was a time to reflect on the community at large and live together in peace.

“The place we are living now in Australia is the best place in the world and today is all about coming together as one,” Mr Ali Rafee said.
