Safer and Stronger Community Pilot Program Newsletter № 1

Ethnic Council of Shepparton and District LogoOur Safer and Stronger Community Pilot program staff have produced a newsletter with the aim of capturing the activity of the program, presenting opportunities for community engagement and looking forward to post Covid-19 situations.  The Safer and Stronger Community Pilot program is funded by the State Government to look at innovative ways to prevent domestic violence in immigrant and refugee communities.

At the Ethnic Council we are striving hard to build the capability of our staff, communities and partnering organisations to respond appropriately within a cultural context in the space of Family Violence and Prevention of Violence Against Women to build safer and stronger communities. We aim to achieve this by incorporating an intersectional approach to prevent Family Violence and promote gender equity in refugee and migrant communities. We also aspire to create an environment at the Ethnic Council that is safe, accessible and transparent.

We are looking forward to more actively engaging with the communities and growing their capacity as COVID-19 restrictions are eased and at the same time strengthening our organisations ability to respond to their needs.

This newsletter produced by our Safer and Stronger Community Pilot program is capturing the activity of the program and presenting an opportunity for community engagement and looking forward to post Covid-19 situations.

We are aware that the reporting of domestic violence has increased dramatically during Covid-19 across all communities and the recent reporting of 5 women killed by partners during a 17 day period earlier this month demonstrates how serious this issue is.
