National youth survey: Racism and gender discrimination top concerns for young people

Gerson Lopez, 20, is among the over 25,000 young people surveyed in a new report that showed for the first time equity and discrimination were the top national concerns for young people.

“We are not given the voice that we deserve,” Gerson told The Feed.

“And having been through all the things that I’ve been through, I’m just sick of being silenced. I’m tired of not being heard. And I’m frustrated that we don’t have [a] platform.”

Helping African-Australian women escape domestic violence despite the taboos

Chiaka MonekeChiaka Moneke was working as a family lawyer helping women recover from the carnage of violent and broken relationships when she decided to take some of her own advice. “Every time I’d go to work, I’d go to the bathroom and think about the interview I just had with a woman, and I would think to myself, ‘why can’t you take some of your own advice?'” she said. But her decision to leave her abusive husband had huge consequences.
