As the guest of Board and Staff of the Ethnic Council of Shepparton and District, Councillor Geoff Dobson – former Mayor of City of Greater Shepparton and President of the Real Estate Institute of Victoria – was a Guest Speaker at the Annual General Meeting on September 29, 2022. Cr Dobson presented on the regional development of Shepparton from a number of perspectives relevant to the work of the Ethnic Council, particularly in the area of settlement and providing services to new settlement communities of Shepparton and the Goulburn Valley.

The report notes the challenges faced with dealing with the Covid pandemic, the contribution of staff to community recovery and overall performance to ensure our financial viability and standard of service delivery.

Chris Hazelman, Manager of the Ethnic Council of Shepparton and District Inc., gives one Annual Report for year 2022 on 29 September 2022. The report provides a comprehensive overview of the Ethnic Council’s activities for the year 2021-2022, together with the staff allocation to the Vaccination Centre. Reopening the office after Covid revealed major issues with spacing, social distancing and staff needs.

Gambling Information Session

The majority of Shepparton’s ethnic – refugee – asylum seeker communities think that gambling is a problem. People want a change. Communities are not openly discussing gambling harm. Ethnic Council of Shepparton and District – in partnership with Primary Care Connect, will hold a Gambling Risks Information Session at the Masonic Lodge, Welsford St, Shepparton on Tuesday 30 August at 5:30pm.

Victorian Energy Compare Rebate

Victorian Energy Compare is the Victorian Government’s free energy price comparison website that allows you to find the cheapest electricity or gas plan for your household or small business. You can also use the website to calculate how much money you could save on your energy bills by installing solar panels. The Ethnic Council is offering assistance to refugees, asylum seekers, migrants and language challenged persons to access this government service.

Sam Atukorala inducted to Victorian Multicultural Honour Roll

When Sam Atukorala came to Australia, he never saw himself being anything but a banker, let alone landing himself on the Victorian Multicultural Honour Roll. Mr Atukorala was among 28 people chosen in the first-ever Victorian Multicultural Honour Roll, created to recognise individuals who have made lasting contributions to multiculturalism in the state.

Multicultural Women’s Health Expo

For Refugee Week, Wise Women Well in collaboration with the Ethnic Council will hold a Multicultural Women’s Health Expo at St Paul’s African House on Wednesday 29 June from 10:00-2:30pm. Childcare and Lunch will be provided for all attending. Many local agencies will be participating in this event. Language help is available for Arabic along with Sudanese, Syrian, Hazaragi, Dari, Farsi, Dinka, Arabic, Swahili, Gikuyu, Sinhala, Kirundi, Tagalog.
