International Migrants Day 2022

International Migrants DayEvery year on 18th December, the world marks International Migrants Day, a day set aside to recognize the important contribution of migrants while highlighting the challenges they face.

On 4 December 2000, the UN General Assembly, taking into account the large and increasing number of migrants in the world, proclaimed 18 December as International Migrants Day.

The day was selected to mark the anniversary of the 1990 adoption by UN General Assembly of the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families.

UN Member States and intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations observe the day through the dissemination of information on the human rights and fundamental freedoms of migrants, and through the sharing of experiences and the design of actions to ensure their protection.

UNESCO places emphasis on the human face of migration. It addresses the implications of the movement of people within its fields of competence, firmly embedding its interventions in a human rights framework.

A Day Without Migrants

How would a day without migrants look like? Contrary to what some may believe, migrants play a vital role in the global economy.

Studies show that immigrants bring growth and innovation in both the countries they come from, and in those they move to.

Most Western nations face a demographic time-bomb as their aging populations and low birth rates mean that they will have to rely on immigrants to drive and sustain economic growth. It is, therefore, in the best interests of these developed nations to support a safe and orderly migration.

Global Compact for Migration

The Global Compact is designed to:

  • Support international cooperation on the governance of international migration;
  • Provide a comprehensive menu of options for States from which they can select policy options to address some of the most pressing issues around international migration; and
  • Give states the space and flexibility to pursue implementation based on their own migration realities and capacities.

The Global Compact is framed consistent with target 10.7 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in which Member States committed to cooperate internationally to facilitate safe, orderly and regular migration and its scope is defined in Annex II of the New York Declaration. It is intended to:

  • Address all aspects of international migration, including the humanitarian, developmental, human rights-related and other aspects;
  • Make an important contribution to global governance and enhance coordination on international migration;
  • Present a framework for comprehensive international cooperation on migrants and human mobility;
  • Set out a range of actionable commitments, means of implementation and a framework for follow-up and review among Member States regarding international migration in all its dimensions;
  • Be guided by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Addis Ababa Action Agenda; and
  • Be informed by the Declaration of the 2013 High-Level Dialogue on International Migration and Development.
