The Greater Shepparton Nepalese Community group celebrated an inaugural event with a Christmas gathering on Sunday, December 25.

The Greater Shepparton Nepalese Community Christmas Gathering 2022 was attended by about 200 people and featured a blend of western Christmas traditions and Nepali tradition.

Group president Gyan Lama said the event hailed the official beginning of the Greater Shepparton Nepalese Community group. “This is the first formal program for Greater Shepparton Nepalese Community,” Mr Lama said.

The event began with a traditional Nepali welcoming ceremony.

As a nod to Christmas, children were gifted presents, played games such as pass the parcel and were visited by Santa Claus.

For the adults, Nepali dancing, singing and food were on offer.

To celebrate the auspicious occasion, the group’s 13-member executive committee, which organised the event, arranged for famous Nepali singer Pramod Nirwan to perform.

Mr Lama described the free event as a success and acknowledged and thanked the sponsors, which included the Ethnic Council of Shepparton and District, Ghothane Lawyers, Overlander Hotel, Yeti Football Club and Popular Auto Tech.

The Greater Shepparton Nepalese Community is hoping 2023 will see the group become more involved in Shepparton community events, and there are hopes for the group to start language classes.

“We just want to unite all the people living around Shepparton,” Mr Lama said.
