CO.AS.IT. – Italian Assistance Association – has operated in Australia since 1968 as a charitable institution, strongly committed to the general well-being and the enhancement of the quality of life of the Italian–Australian community. We aim to achieve the full potential of our community through the delivery of culturally appropriate services and the promotion of the Italian language, culture and heritage.

Visitation Program

CO.AS.IT.’s Visitation Program provides friendly one-to-one visits by community visitors in private home on a weekly basis, or at least fortnightly in residential aged care facilities. Visits conducted in residential aged care facilities may be provided as either one-to-one visits or as a group activity.

The program was initiated through the leadership of Sir James Gobbo in 1984 and from a simple concept of visiting lonely older Italian speaking individuals has grown to provide friendship and socialisation to many who find themselves socially isolated due to ageing in a non-native country. There is no cost in participating in the program, it is funded by the Australian Federal Government.

The program considers the interests and social needs of the consumer and allocates a volunteer to meet those needs.

To receive social visits in private homes, this can be arranged by contacting My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 or visit My Aged Care website. An assessment will be organized by the Regional Assessment Service to assign the referral code to participate in the Social Support Individual visiting program offered by CO.AS.IT. Nursing home referrals instead are made directly to organization by the residentials aged care facility staff, family members or other persons.
