Elder Abuse Awareness – Arabic Speaking Communities

Ethnic Communities Council of Victoria LogoThe Ethnic Communities Council of Victoria – in collaboration with Seniors Rights Victoria is offering a two day practical training course on delivery of Elder Abuse Awareness to groups of older people and their families from ARABIC speaking Communities. This is an exciting opportunity to develop community awareness of Elder Abuse in the Arabic-speaking CALD Community.


Bilingual community educator — elder abuse awareness raising

Aim:
To train bilingual members of Arabic speaking communities in how to deliver community education on elder abuse, using the community education kit developed through community consultation. The kit includes culturally appropriate messages aimed at older people and their families, scenarios or stories to stimulate discussion, and information on where to go for help. The kit is designed to be delivered in the first language of the participants.

What’s involved
Two full days free training, two weeks apart, at the ECCV in Coburg on Wednesday 10 July and Wednesday 24 July 2019, with lunch provided
A commitment to deliver at least 2 community education sessions per year to groups of ‘ older people in the community
A commitment to complete evaluation forms, including numbers of people attending, and return them to ECCV following each session
Prior to training you will be asked to complete a self-assessment of your previous experience and skills (for training purposes)

What support will be provided?
Training and ongoing support by Seniors Rights Victoria and ECCV
The option to deliver sessions with a Seniors Rights Victoria volunteer
The opportunity to be part of a peer support network of others trained in elder abuse community education

Payment
If you are a volunteer/casual, you will be paid a fee covering preparation, travel and delivery of the session. An invoice to ECCV will be required
If you are conducting sessions as a paid worker with an ethno-specific organisation, the ECCV will reimburse your organisation for your time. An invoice will be required

About you
Bilingual, English and Arabic
Some experience in communicating with older people and/or public speaking
Past or current work and/or training in human services is desirable
Respected community members encouraged to apply
