Eight years after South Sudan gained its independence, an event will be on this Saturday in Shepparton to celebrate the day.

On July 9, 2011, South Sudanese from across the country and the world came together in the capital city of Juba to celebrate the birth of the new nation, the Republic of South Sudan.

Goulburn Galley South Sudanese Community Association member Luke Madhal said it was important for him to celebrate Independence Day in Shepparton.

‘It’s a day of appreciation and acknowledging the people of the past who sacrificed so much to get to where we are today,’ Mr Madhal said.

He said the event would be a day of happiness and a chance to celebrate cultural identity through dance, colour and cultural food.

‘We are extending our invitation to the wider community,’ Mr Madhal said.
