Mental Health and Farmers

Mental Health Foundation of AustraliaThe Mental Health Foundation Australia cordially invites you to our National Symposium on Farmers Mental Health and Wellbeing. The mental health and wellbeing of Farmers’ is extremely important, not only because of the detrimental effect on Farmers and their families but also the direct impact on the nation’s vital agricultural industry.

The suicide rate for Australia’s farming men is about double the general male population, sitting at 32.2 compared with 16.6 per 10,000. This is a difference that has been documented since the 1980s, but with little change to rates of suicide. The mental health and wellbeing of Farmers’ is extremely important, not only because of the detrimental effect on Farmers and their families but also the direct impact on the nation’s vital agricultural industry. Farming has a unique set of pressures, with farmers being more likely to suffer from depression caused by financial pressures, isolation, personal drought related stress, community drought related stress and the impact of the recent Black Summer 2019/20 bushfires.

With that in mind, the Foundation has organised the National Symposium on Farmers’ Mental Health to raise awareness about mental health and wellbeing among farmers, and to have a discussion on the status of support services available to them

The purpose of this symposium is to collate all the concerns raised and prepare a list of recommendations to be sent to all levels of government so necessary actions can be taken for the benefit of farmers’ in Australia. It will be well attended by industry associations, Local and Federal Members of Parliament, Mayors, Councillors and key figures in the mental health space.
