St Georges Road Food Festival

Prepare yourself for the heady scents of exotic spices and the mouthwatering flavours of India, Afghanistan and Lebanon — a new street festival is set to hit Shepparton this weekend.

The St George’s Rd Food Festival will showcase Shepparton’s melting pot of cultures and follows the success of the ever-popular Emerge Festival at Victoria Park Lake.

The festival will feature hot food for lunch, multicultural food products to take home, music and entertainment, a fashion parade, henna stall, cooking demonstrations and a community soccer match with Victoria Police and emergency services.

Greater Shepparton City Council, Word and Mouth, Ethnic Council of Shepparton and District, The Bridge, Shepparton English Language Centre, headspace, Yorta Yorta and UnitingCare Cutting Edge are working together to run the event.

City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Jenny Houlihan said the festival aimed to raise awareness of the broad range of cultures in the region. “The traders in St George’s Rd represent a range of cultures and this event gives the wider community the opportunity to celebrate our multicultural community,” Cr Houlihan said.

“I encourage people to come along with their families and enjoy the food and entertainment.” The friendly St George’s Rd traders welcomed the idea of a street food festival and said it would allow them to share their diverse range of food products with the broader community.

News journalist Estelle Griepink visited each of them to take a look inside their stores and find out how they came to settle in Shepparton. The Shepparton St George’s Rd Food Festival runs from 11 am to 4 pm this Sunday at the corner of Hayes St and St George’s Rd. St George’s Rd will be closed between Hayes St and Swallow St to allow for the crowds. Entry is free.
