Updated COVID-19 vaccine rollout advice

Updated COVID-19 vaccine rollout advice
Medical experts in Australia now recommend the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for adults aged under 60. Previous medical advice was the Pfizer vaccine was preferred for adults aged under 50. This advice is now available in 63 languages.

The experts at the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) have updated their advice to recommend the Pfizer vaccine for adults aged under 60.

This updated advice is based on new evidence that shows more risk of a rare blood-clotting condition in the 50-59 year-old age group than first thought. This condition is called thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome, or TTS.

The AstraZeneca vaccine will be given to people 60 years and over. For people aged 60 years or over, the benefits of vaccination outweigh the risks of TTS.

Getting vaccinated remains the most important way to prevent serious illness or death from COVID-19. Many millions of people around the world have had their vaccines safely.

People who have had their first dose of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine without any serious adverse effects should still receive their second dose. This includes adults under 60 years of age.

Having your second dose offers you the best protection from getting seriously sick from COVID-19. If you’ve had your first dose you should book in for your second dose.

Government vaccination clinics that already give the Pfizer vaccine will immediately start accepting people aged 50-59 for Pfizer.

People in Australia can be confident that our medical experts continue to review evidence and data from here and from overseas. It’s recommended that everyone eligible gets the COVID-19 vaccination.
