Council Update: Thursday 20 October 2022

Council Update: Thursday 20 October 2022Greater Shepparton Council gives an update on rubbish collection, reopening of recovery centres, skip bins for rubbish, household cleanup, disposal of sandbags, public transport updates, and Food relief and flood assistance

Update on kerbside collection

Kerbside bin collection commenced today as per the normal collection schedule. Unfortunately, we do not have the capacity to collect bins that were missed earlier this week due to the flood emergency.

For those who missed out collection this week, please leave your bins on the nature strip and they will be picked up either on the next scheduled collection day or earlier depending on resourcing availability.

If your bin is too full it can be emptied at your nearest Resource Recovery Centre.

Reopening of Resource Recovery Centres

The Ardmona and Shepparton Resource Recovery Centres are currently accepting waste, including rubbish from your kerbside bins at no charge for domestic customers. See hours here.

Please note, the Murchison Resource Recovery Centre is currently closed due to flooding. We will provide an update as soon it is opened.

Reopening of Cosgrove Landfill

Cosgrove Landfill has opened for normal operations as of today.

A reminder to residents that Cosgrove Landfill accepts commercial waste only and is not open to residential customers.

Public skip bins

Council will supply skip bins in public spaces for flood waste. A map of these locations will be shared on Council’s social media once confirmed.

Household clean up

If you are able to get to a Resource Recovery Centre to dispose of flood waste all fees are waived.

We have a limited collection service for those who are unable to dispose of flood damaged materials. This will be collected from nature strips throughout the region.

For rural properties, a seperate collection schedule is being planned and will be shared in due course. In the meantime, please do not place you’re flood damaged materials on the roadside as this can cause a risk to traffic.

If you suspect asbestos, please DO NOT place it on nature strips for collection. Any waste suspected of containing asbestos will not be collected and poses a risk to the community. Please contact a professional removalist for advice.

Disposing of sandbags

If sandbags have been effected by water they become contaminated and must be disposed of like hard rubbish at a Resource Recovery Centre. If they have not been impacted by water or gone hard, please try to reuse what you can or store them in a dry place.

Please do not put sandbags in the skip bins as they make the skip bins too heavy to collect.

Flood assistance payments available

Funding has been made available for clean-up efforts, operational support and wider relief payments to those affected by the floods.

To find out more about the important recovery support, visit Council’s website.

Protect yourself from mosquitoes

Spring flooding can mean more mosquitos biting and breeding, including the ones that can carry diseases that make you sick.

Mosquitoes like stagnant water. An increase in mosquito numbers is expected from about two weeks after flooding.

The best way to avoid mosquito bites is by covering up, wearing long, loose-fitting clothing and using mosquito repellents containing picardin or DEET on all exposed skin.

It is important to empty stagnant water around your property as soon as possible.

Water and sewer update

All treated tap water supplied by Goulburn Valley Water remains safe to drink.
Drinking water supplies have remained safe in all towns within Greater Shepparton.

Preparation on the water treatment plant has held up and there is no issue with the treatment or quality coming from the facility.

All sewer pump stations, with the exemption of one, are operational. There is a lot of water to move so it will take some time, however it will clear.
