Celebrating the Filipino Community

Filipino Community of SheppartonGreater Shepparton’s Filipino community will take over Maude St Mall on Saturday for the latest Culture Corner showcase. Filipino community members will share traditional clothing, music, food and drinks, including the much-loved bihon noodles and spring rolls, as part of a Greater Shepparton City Council multicultural initiative to highlight the city’s cultural diversity.

Malaysian and Iraqi communities have already showcased their cultures earlier this year.

The Filipino community will use the forum on Saturday to celebrate Philippine Independence Day, which is acknowledged on June 12 each year.

At 10.30am, the community members will sing the Philippine national anthem and display the national flag.

Food and drink will be available to buy and Shepparton residents are encouraged to come and celebrate Filipino culture.

Council’s multiculturalism development officer Sarmed Yassin said more than 14 per cent of Greater Shepparton residents identified as being born overseas.

‘The people of Greater Shepparton come from all over the world and we are proud to say that,’ Mr Yassin said.

‘We want people from every culture to experience new things, get involved, celebrate our region’s diversity and have some fun with it.’

Culture Corner is on the first Saturday of each month.
