‘Unmasked: Racism & Discrimination

Unmasked: Racism & Discrimination, Determinants of Health Inequity‘Unmasked: Racism & Discrimination, Determinants of Health Inequity’ is an in-person and online event on Thursday, 27 April, at Monash University (Clayton campus). This event is a collaboration between Federation of Ethnic Communities’ Councils of Australia – FECCA’s Australian Multicultural Health Collaborative, the World Wellness Group and Monash University.

Ali and Vihan, two people seeking asylum in Australia, are struggling to access basic healthcare due to their visa conditions. They arrived in Australia with unmet health needs and require ongoing treatment for chronic conditions. Ali does not have work rights and has no means of paying for medical appointments and medicines. Vihan is insulin dependent and cannot access the National Diabetes Subsidy Scheme.

Unfortunately, without access to Medicare, they cannot afford the extremely high prices of healthcare, medication and treatments.

World Wellness Clinic (WWG) has been providing them with medical services, covering the costs of blood work, health assessments, and some medications, along with pro-bono doctors and nurses. However, this support comes at significant outlay, estimated annually at $100,000, for providing basic healthcare to 300 clients seeking asylum.

Help WWG defray these costs and support our asylum seekers.

Global and local experts focus on health inequity
In early December 2022, the Lancet advised of a new Lancet Series on Racism, Xenophobia, Discrimination, and Health, which highlights the negative impacts of discrimination on health and the need to address it when considering approaches to public health.

Professor Delanjathan Devakumar will present these issues in an upcoming hybrid webinar featuring speakers Dr Chris Lemoh and Professor Helen Skouteris, with registration available for in-person or virtual attendance.
