We invite you to join us this Sorry Day as we pause to remember and acknowledge the Stolen Generations and the impacts of those policies that caused such pain and suffering to individuals, families and communities over so many generations.

On the 26th of May 1997 the landmark Bringing Them Home Report was tabled in Federal Parliament. Bringing Them Home is the final report of the National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from Their Families and was conducted by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (now called the Human Rights Commission) between 1995 and 1997.
The Report acknowledged that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children had been forcibly separated from their families and communities since the early days of European occupation in Australia. These children are now known as the ‘Stolen Generations’.
The Report also recommended that a national ‘Sorry Day’ be held each year to commemorate the history of forcible removals and the ongoing effects of these removals on individuals, families and communities.
On 26 May 1998, the first National Sorry Day was held to commemorate the anniversary of the Report and to remember the grief, suffering and injustice experienced by the Stolen Generations.
