Statement on Christchurch Terrorism

The Board and Staff of the Ethnic Council of Shepparton and District expresses its support for the people of Christchurch with a statement on the Christchurch killings on Friday, 15 March 2019.

The Ethnic Council of Shepparton and District expresses its support for the people of Christchurch on behalf of the multicultural communities of Shepparton.

Like all fair minded people we are appalled at the senseless act of terrorism perpetrated on innocent people in their places of worship. We are mindful that no person is born hating another and the behaviour demonstrated in Christchurch is an act of hate that has been learnt from the actions and words heard in the community from the media, internet, commentators and politicians.

For many years community leaders have warned politicians time and time again to refrain from hate-speech that targets migrant and ethnic minority groups as political scapegoats.

The Ethnic Council will continue to promote and represent the social, cultural and economic well-being of ethnic communities in the Goulburn Valley Region through the provision of quality and innovative settlement, refugee support, community development and information and advocacy services.
