As part of the Stories of Multicultural Australia webinar series, SCoA is hosting three webinars. featuring award-winning media commentators and multicultural champions. What is it like to be interviewed, and to pitch to newsrooms? Join us for a conversation with award-winning journalists and media professionals on their editorial process, and to learn how multicultural voices can stand out in a sea of media releases and competing news stories.

In this session for multicultural storytellers, Settlement Council of Australia invites a panel of award-winning and notable journalists to share their insights and experiences on reporting on multicultural and refugee issues, and to hear how storytellers are making a difference through media opportunities.

Speakers:
Dr Hass Dellal AO, Australian Multicultural Foundation Executive Director, Former SBS Director & Chair

Dr Hass Dellal AO is an Officer of the Order of Australia for distinguished service to the multicultural community through leadership and advisory roles, to the advancement of inclusiveness and social harmony, to youth, and to the broadcast media. He has over 30 years of service to multicultural organisations, the arts and the community, promoting multicultural Australia.

Sowaibah Hanifie, ABC News Reporter

Sowaibah Hanifie is an award winning journalist. She’s worked with the ABC for five years and in 2020 was named Young Journalist of the year when she was working in the Northern Territory. Sowaibah is a first generation Australian with Afghan heritage.

Laurie Nowell, Author of Refugee Stories: In their own words, AMES media consultant

Laurie Nowell has been a journalist and writer for 25 years. He has written for publications in Australia, the United Kingdom and Canada. His work has been published in the Herald Sun, The Age and The Australian in Australia and The Guardian, The Times and the Daily Mail in the UK.
