Victoria Police in their community protection role have provided a car safety check list. Translations are provided in Vietnamese, Thai, Korean, Nepali, Chinese (Traditional and Simplified), Farsi, Arabic, Punjabi, Khmer, Dinka, Somali and Amharic.
What are some safe car-habits I can adopt?
- Always remember to lock your vehicle, even when at Car.
- Never leave valuables in your car. Leaving items in your vehicle isn’t worth the time, cost, and effort of replacing them.
- Remove any documents that could lead to a risk of identity theft (logbooks included)
- Where possible, park in well-lit areas to reduce concealment opportunities.
- Where possible, try to avoid leaving your car unattended and unchecked for long periods of time.
- Ensure you close your car windows every time your vehicle is parked.
- Make it a habit to always store your car keys in a safe and secure place.
- Remember to physically check that your car is locked and valuables are removed before you step away.
I think my car, or something from within my car, has been stolen. What do I do?
- Report thefts of and from motor vehicles to the Police Assistance line on 131 444.
- In an emergency, always call Triple Zero on 000.
- Contact your car insurance agency to report the theft.
