Severe Weather: Stay Informed

GSCC - InformedSevere weather across Northern and North East parts of the state, including heavy rainfall, is expected for Shepparton and surrounds.

Weather Bureau modelling is currently indicating we are likely to see flooding commence around the Shepparton area, at minor flood levels, from late Tuesday into Wednesday.

Through Wednesday, we can expect to see moderate flooding, with the potential for low-end major flooding around 11 metres. If this scenario eventuates this is over a metre less than the 2022 flooding event.

Given the current forecast, worst case scenarios for low-end major flooding indicates we may see more isolated properties, than inundated properties. If properties are isolated, it is likely to impact some properties in low-lying areas.

Be prepared and know your local flood risk.

Sandbagging can be effective for temporary and partial mitigation of flooding, however, they should not be the only defence against flooding.

For at-risk residents (those in low-lying areas) in and around Shepparton, a sandbagging collection point will be set up today:
Shepparton Showgrounds, High Street, Shepparton
⏰ From 8am – 5pm today
❗ Please note you will be required to fill your own sandbags
Most homes can be protected by 25 sandbags or less. The number of sandbags will depend on your local flood risk and availability.

In any emergency scenario, it pays to be prepared in advance:

  • Have your food and prescription medications on hand to last you 72 hours if needed.
  • Check in on any neighbours or family who might need a hand.
  • Be safe around trees – don’t camp or park under trees. Damp ground and stormy weather can lead to tree falls.
  • Council have resources on our website about what to do in the first 72 hours of an emergency: https://buff.ly/48IZUDF
  • And finally, never drive through or play in floodwater.
