Bringing multicultural young people and their families back into sport

Multicultural Youth and SportThe Centre for Multicultural Youth recognises sport as an effective tool for engaging newly-arrived young people, and facilitate programs to increase their access and ongoing participation in sport and recreation opportunities in the local community – promoting social cohesion and championing diversity and inclusion in sport. What will support a return to sport after COVID-19 for multicultural young people and their families and communities? Join an online seminar on 8 December 2020 and learn more.

The Centre for Multicultural Youth works closely with sporting bodies such as State Sporting Associations, sports clubs, local government and Registered Training Organisations, to increase the sector’s capability and capacity to engage diverse young people and their families in sport.

Increasing cultural diversity in an organisation such as a sports club or body is possible when the organisation is more culturally-inclusive. Game Plan was developed to provide an introduction on how to do this for sports clubs, sporting bodies, State Sporting Associations and other organisations working with sports clubs and associations.

What will support a return to sport after COVID-19 for multicultural young people and their families and communities?

How can clubs and workers support multicultural young people to get back out onto the pitch/court/field and enjoy healthy activity?

This webinar will discuss these issues with researchers, workers and young people to hear the benefits of sport, some of the barriers to participation for multicultural young people, and what works to assist them in returning to sport.

Chaired by Carmel Guerra, CEO of the Centre for Multicultural Youth, with special guests:

  • Selin Arpaci, Community Champion with CMY’s Welcome Football program
  • Marie Pewhairangi, Youth Worker, Wyndham City Council
  • Ruth Jeanes, Associate Professor, Monash University
