Nawruz is a Persian festival which is celebrated by people in Afghanistan, Iran Tajikistan, Kurdistan and other parts of the Persian-speaking world. Nawruz is the first day of Hamal (Farvardin), the first month of the Afghani or Iranian solar year. Since ancient times it has been the great national holiday.
There was plenty of fun and laughs shared at the fourth edition of the Community Cup on Sunday 24 February. Spectators were treated to a round-robin style competition at Victory Park, which featured teams comprised of members from the indigenous, and multicultural communities and members from Victoria Police.
A unique insight into Shepparton’s Islamic and Sikh communities will be provided next month. The Ethnic Council of Shepparton will host its Cultural Bus Tour, coinciding with Greater Shepparton City Council’s heritage open days.
The Goulburn Valley’s African community leaders have partnered with Victoria Police in launching an African Australian Community Taskforce. The official launch, held on Thursday 24 January 2018 at St Paul’s African House in Shepparton, saw about 40 people from many local organisations gather to support the launch of the African-Australian Community Taskforce.
More than 200 people saw fellow citizens recognised for their community service at Shepparton’s Australia Day celebrations in the Queen’s Gardens on Saturday. Ethnic Council Strategic Engagement Coordinator Sam Atukorala was announced as the Greater Shepparton Citizen of the Year for his involvement in the community.
