The Ethnic Communities Council of Victoria (ECCV) is working with Victorian Council of Social Service (VCOSS) and the Department of Health (DH) on an Emergency Management Project to support emergency preparedness and resilience among migrant and refugee communities. Expressions of interest are invited from members of migrant and refugee backgrounds and have strong networks within at least one migrant or refugee community.
The Ethnic Communities’ Council of Victoria (ECCV) held a gathering of Victorian regional ethnic communities’ councils over two days in April, hosted by the Ethnic Council of Shepparton & District in Shepparton.
Regional Ethnic Councils in Victoria met at St Paul’s African House, Shepparton, on Friday 23 April to discuss challenges facing Cultural and Linguistically Diverse commuities in Victoria. The meet was attended by representatives from Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, Mildura, Albury Wodonga and officers and Board Members of the Ethnic Communities Council of Victoria.

The Ethnic Communities’ Council of Victoria and Diversity and Disability (DnD) share a belief that the most effective advocacy comes from people with a lived experience and therefore disability advocacy is strongest coming from people with disability. There will be a Self Advocacy Training and Feast for Ethnic people with disability at the Foodstore, Fryer St, Shepparton on Wednesday, 3 December, 2019.
The Ethnic Communities’ Council of Victoria (ECCV) consulted with migrant and refugee community members to identify what facilitates or hinders access to the NDIS and other disability services for them, their families, and their communities. ECCV wanted to better understand if and how the NDIS has improved the lives and wellbeing of Victoria’s culturally diverse communities. It was found that many community members face significant difficulties accessing appropriate disability services, lack adequate knowledge, and are currently prevented from participating and reaching their full potential in society.
The ability to access care is essential for the health and wellbeing of culturally diverse older people living in regional Victoria. The Ethnic Communities’ Council of Victoria believes that further research is needed to assess service gaps to culturally diverse seniors in regional Victoria. A number of gaps and barriers to equitable aged care for culturally diverse older people in regional Victoria are simply unaddressed. This report summary identifies key areas and recommendations for improvements to Aged Care for Culturally Diverse residents in regional Victoria.
The Ethnic Communities Council of Victoria – in collaboration with Seniors Rights Victoria is offering a two day practical training course on delivery of Elder Abuse Awareness to groups of older people and their families from ARABIC speaking Communities. This is an exciting opportunity to develop community awareness of Elder Abuse in the Arabic-speaking CALD Community.
