For the first time, a Nepali language movie is being shown in Shepparton on Monday, January 23 at Village Cinemas Shepparton.
Hosted by the Greater Shepparton Nepalese Community, the charity-based event will premiere The Secrets of Radha at 7pm.
In attendance will be the film’s writer and director, Subarna Thapa, to introduce the movie and take part in a Q and A afterwards.
“It will be the first time in regional Victoria a Nepalese film of any kind will be screened … it will bring joy and happiness to the Nepalese community, and it has English subtitles so all are welcome to come and watch too,” he said.
Mr Thapa said the film followed the journey of a woman dominated by patriarchal society who holds dignity, capacity, compassion and love for her family while searching for her missing husband.
The social drama was shot in Nepal with local cast and crew in the hills of Midwestern Nepal and the capital city of Kathmandu.
It showcases the beautiful culture, society and practice of the Nepalese community to the wider Australian public.
Greater Shepparton Nepalese Community executive member Jyothi Bhandari said the money raised from the event would be distributed back to a community orphanage in either Nepal or Australia.
Ms Bhandari said giving back was more important for her community now than ever after the plane crash on January 15 that killed at least 68 people and was labelled Nepal’s “worst air crash in three decades”.
