Celebrating unity, heritage

Celebrating unity and heritage: Families and friends gather to commemorate Philippine Independence Day and embrace their shared culture.

On June 12, 1898, the Filipino flag was unfurled for the first time, accompanied by a stirring celebration for the inaugural public rendition of the Philippines’ national anthem.

This marked the proclamation of Philippine independence, a significant milestone in the country’s struggle for freedom from Spanish rule.

It was not until July 4, 1946, that the Philippines achieved full independence, when the United States granted sovereignty to the Philippines in accordance with the Philippine Independence Act.

On June 12, 2023, the nation commemorated the 125th anniversary of Philippine independence in Kawit, Cavite, where the declaration of independence took place.

To celebrate this significant milestone, the Filipino-Australian Friends Association organised a special event at the Peppermill Inn Motel in Shepparton on Friday, with more than 100 people attending.

The night was filled with inspiring speeches about the historical journey of the nation, vibrant traditional dances, entertainment, a raffle and a fashion parade/ pageant.

The theme of this year’s Independence Day celebration was “Kalayaan, Kinabukasan, Kasaysayan” (freedom, future and history).

The FAFA event provided a platform for Filipino Australian community members to come together, honour their heritage, and express their deep-rooted pride in being part of a nation that has overcome significant challenges to attain freedom and progress, as well as educate non-Filipinos on the significance of the milestone.
