2020 Interpreter Scholarships - Advanced Diploma of InterpretingThe Victorian Government is offering scholarships to students who are accepted into the 2020 Advanced Diploma of Interpreting program at RMIT University to study interpreting in one of the several languages. Applications should be submitted by 1 December for the Advanced Diploma.


The Victorian Government is working to improve the supply, quality and use of language services in Victoria.

Since 2003, the Victorian Government has offered scholarships to support students undertaking one of the following courses at RMIT University:

  • Diploma of Interpreting
  • Advanced Diploma of Interpreting

We have helped more than 500 people gain certification with the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters.

26% of Victorians (over 1.53 million people) speak a language other than English at home.

The scholarships aim to bolster Victoria’s supply of qualified interpreters so that non-English speakers can better access crucial government services, such as health care and housing support

You must have successfully completed an Australian Year 12 (or equivalent senior secondary school) qualification.

  • Vietnamese
  • Persian

ADVANCED DIPLOMA OF INTERPRETING

The Advanced Diploma of Interpreting is a one year, full-time program that begins in February 2020 and finishes in November 2020.

Classes will be held at RMIT University city campus in Melbourne. Classes may be held during the day or evening, as well as some Saturdays, depending on the timetable.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Up to $4,900 will be awarded under each scholarship to assist with program fees. The specific amount will depend on each student’s enrolment status. Scholarships will be paid directly to RMIT University on behalf of the student.

PROGRAM FEES
The Scholarship will not cover the full program fee. In such cases, students will be required to pay the gap. The program fee amount will depend on the student’s eligibility for a government-subsidised place or other concessions. ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible for a scholarship you must:

  • be an Australian citizen, or have permanent residency (consideration will also be given to applications from people seeking asylum);
  • be enrolled in the RMIT University Advanced Diploma of Interpreting in one of the targeted languages offered for 2020; and
  • remain enrolled and meet attendance requirements for each unit at RMIT University for the duration of the program in 2020.

Eligible students will be offered scholarships by February 2020 and will be required to formally accept the scholarship offer by the 1 March 2020.

NAATI CERTIFICATION
Students who successfully complete the Advanced Diploma of Interpreting program will be eligible to sit the external Certified Interpreter test run by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI).

Detailed information about the NAATI certification process will be provided by RMIT University after enrolment. The cost of the external NAATI certification test and the final certification, if successful, will be paid by the Victorian Government on behalf of students who received a scholarship. Note that the Victorian Government will specify the time frame within which graduates of the program must sit the NAATI certification test.

You must indicate the language you are applying for in the application.

You will receive a confirmation email from RMIT University when your application has been completed.

You may be invited to submit a formal direct application if and when your language is confirmed.

STEP 2 – FULFIL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
You will be required to provide evidence of language proficiency in English and your other language. If your senior secondary schooling was completed in your other language, you will be invited to sit an online English test. Other proof of English proficiency will be accepted.

If your senior secondary schooling was completed in English, you will be required to sit a LOTE (Language Other than English) test. Upon submission of your ‘Direct Application’, you will be prompted on the dashboard to complete the ‘Selection task’ (LOTE/Bilingual test). JANUARY- FEBRUARY 2020 >RMIT University confirms the languages the 2020 Advanced Diploma of Interpreting will be delivered in.
FEBRUARY 2020 >Successful Scholarship recipients will be notified.
FEBRUARY 2020 >Orientation.
11 FEBRUARY 2020 >Semester starts.
31 MARCH 2020 >Final date to withdraw from the program.
MAY 2020 >2020 Scholarship recipients will be acknowledged at the 2019 Graduation Ceremony.

FURTHER INFORMATION
MINIMUM CLASS SIZES
Interpreting programs in languages which receive low enrolments may not be offered.

The languages in which the Advanced Diploma of Interpreting program will be delivered in 2020 will be confirmed by RMIT University in February 2020. Students who are not offered Diploma or Advanced Diploma of Interpreting may be accepted into Skill Set Course (see Skill Set Brochure for more information).
