Multicultural Seniors Support Program

The Andrews Labor Government is supporting seniors from multicultural communities to foster stronger community connections and promote vibrant local activities.

Minister for Multicultural Affairs Colin Brooks has announced that more than 1,000 multicultural seniors’ organisations will benefit from a significant investment in the Multicultural Seniors Support program.

An investment of $2000 is being provided to each community group to deliver social and cultural activities, purchase equipment and establish digital support networks. Recipients also benefit from complimentary public liability insurance and group accident cover.

New campaign encourages Australians to plan for later life

The Australian Human Rights Commission’s ‘Have You Thought About Later Life’ campaign delivers a range of educational resources to raise awareness about the importance of planning ahead. Future planning empowers older people to have choice and control over their senior years. This campaign forms part of the Commission’s suite of resources for preventing elder abuse. See the resources, in languages English, Arabic, Chinese, Greek, Italian and Vietnamese, and share them with your communities.

Celebrating in true Filipino Australian style

THE Filipino Australian & Friends Association (FAFA) organised a remarkable event at Pepper Mill Inn on June 23 to commemorate the 125th Philippines Independence Day. The celebration was a grand success, filled with incredible performances and a lively atmosphere.

The event showcased a diverse range of talents, including an energetic MC, talented singers, and a variety of group dancers who wowed the audience with both modern and folk dances. The performers were adorned in stunning regalia that added to the visual spectacle. Additionally, a talented ukulele group entertained the audience with their skills.

Syrian Fundraiser for earthquake victims in Syria

The Filipino-Australian Friends Association celebrated Philippines Independence day at the Peppermill Inn on Friday with more than 100 people attending. The theme of this year’s Independence Day celebration was “Kalayaan, Kinabukasan, Kasaysayan” (freedom, future and history).

Empowering Learning

Furaha Baguma — who came to Shepparton as a refugee in 2018 — founded a community English class for fellow refugees, which is now in its second year. Listening, speaking and reading is the focus for students at Umoja Empowerment Group’s English class for refugees in Shepparton.

Kindergarten Registrations Open

Greater Shepparton City Council coordinates the two years of kindergarten that your child is eligible to attend before starting school. Posters are available in English, Swahili, Arabic and Dari. Enrolment for children closes on 11 August.

Maternal and Child Health

COVID-19 Update – July 2023

The seven-day rolling average of patients with COVID in Victorian hospitals is 207, a decrease of 15 per cent from last week. There are currently 174 COVID patients in Victorian hospitals. There are currently 11 COVID patients in intensive care. There are 2 cleared cases in ICU. There are 6 COVID patients on a ventilator. The seven-day rolling average of patients in intensive care in Victorian hospitals is 10. In the past three months, 3,679 COVID patients were hospitalised in Victoria.
