SHEPPARTON has a long proud history of welcoming new arrivals to the country. There are many struggles involved for the families when they touch down on this strange land called Australia. With the help of fantastic organisations like the Ethnic Council of Shepparton and Shepparton English Language Centre, the transition into Australian life is made a little easier.
Shepparton English Language Centre has recently received five refurbished bicycles, thanks to Shepparton Central Rotary Club.
“Victoria Police Shepparton generously donated a number of bikes a few months ago,” the club’s international and community service director Sam Atukorala said.
“Thanks to the support of the Shepparton Central Rotary Club and the expertise of Leigh and Brett from Leading Edge Cycles, these bikes have been repaired.
On Sunday, 16th of June, in glorious sunshine – Mansfield Soccer Club joined with Rural Australians for Refugees (RAR), the Ethnic Council of Shepparton and the Shepparton English Language Centre (SELC) to enjoy a first combined fun & friendly day of soccer, lovely food and an abundant afternoon tea!
Students from Shepparton English Language Centre visited the new Shepparton Law Courts on Tuesday, 4 June. Students at the Language Centre are all from overseas – new settlements and refugees. A court visit is important, for in some middle-eastern cultures, to be seen at court is culturally a matter of shame. So the visit enabled all the students to feel at ease and learn about the Law Courts of Shepparton.
Shepparton English Language Centre, Ethnic Council of Shepparton and Rural Australians for Refugees Mansfield will host a friendly soccer match and BBQ-get to know you in Mansfield on Sunday 16 June. A bus will leave Welsford Street at 9am sharp.
Community Hubs serve as gateways that connect families with each other, with their school, and with existing services. Dozens of community hubs operate under the National Community Hubs Program – recognised as a leading model to engage and support migrant women with young children. Shepparton Community Hubs are based at St Georges Road Primary School & Shepparton English Language Centre, Wilmot Road Primary School and Gowrie Street Primary School.
There was a lot of cheering and yelling as more than 120 Shepparton residents watched Carlton take on the Sydney Swans at the MCG on Saturday.
