English language centre welcomes donation

Donation of bikes to SELC

Shepparton English Language Centre has recently received five refurbished bicycles, thanks to Shepparton Central Rotary Club.

“Victoria Police Shepparton generously donated a number of bikes a few months ago,” the club’s international and community service director Sam Atukorala said.

“Thanks to the support of the Shepparton Central Rotary Club and the expertise of Leigh and Brett from Leading Edge Cycles, these bikes have been repaired.

“Now, in collaboration with the Ethnic Council of Shepparton, we are donating these bikes to the newly arrived young students at SELC.” The donation is much more than just a charitable act — it’s a strategic move aimed at improving the lives of young people in the community.

“We believe that this initiative will not only provide them with a means of transportation but also promote active lifestyles,” Mr Atukorala said. SELC, which provides English language education to new arrivals aged five to 17, expressed gratitude for the contribution.

“We just really appreciate the bikes,” SELC co-ordinator Laurie Hucker said. “It’s very generous of all those involved.”

Mr Hucker said the donated bikes would be distributed among students most in need of them.
